Duchy Leuwenberg's Crystal Flute Bardic Competition
9th Annual Crystal Flute Bardic Competition
On Friday night at Estrella War, the 9th Crystal Flute Bardic Champion shall be chosen! List will open at 7:30 P.M. with the competition to be held at 8:00 P.M. around the Barony of Tir Ysgithr encampment firepit. The list will remain open until the beginning of the first performance. Exceptions will only be made if the total list is less than 10 competitors. See Lady Anne Mulligan or Mistress Isabella Dati to sign up for the list.
Each entry must be vocal (recitative, prose, or song). Instrumental backup is acceptable, but the core of the piece must be vocal since "bardic" refers to an ongoing oral tradition. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. Each performance may be no more than six minutes. The subject matter may be based on anything period or on any persons/happenings within the SCA. This is an annual competition and will be open to anyone displaying paid site fees.
** The Champion's prize is a Crystal Flute (piccolo) in the Key of D. **

The winner shall be chosen by the autocrat of the competition (Master Tonis) and several guest judges. Decisions shall be made based on quality of performance (judges response), period feel/sound (no colloquialisms or modern slang/manners of speech), and entertainment value (based on audience response). It is important to note that "audience response" does not necessarily mean "most applause." If the piece is a tearjerker...we expect tears. If it is the type that leaves the listener just going..."wow...." and looking stunned then that is what we'll be looking for. The intent is not necessarily to be 100% period but to show off the talent of the composer/performer and to be entertaining without having a modern feel that removes the illusion of a medieval bardic competition. In other words, we're looking for period or periodesque pieces.
All who wish to attend the competition and simply enjoy the show are invited to do so.
8th Annual Crystal Fruit Filk Competition
Following the Crystal Flute Bardic competition will be a filk competition for those looking for something a bit looser and more light hearted, or just an overall good time. Any non-period piece (filk or otherwise, any vocal medium) that you think the audience will truly enjoy is welcome. I do request, however, that if a piece is bawdy that at least it is not excessively rude (just use good judgement here…the first competition, after all, was won by a recital of “The Night of the King’s Castration.”) The prize is a bottle of homemade liquour (an alternate prize will be offered if the victor is underage). The filk competition will begin immediately after the Crystal Flute Bardic.
See you there!
